Diary of Didactics

Basketball Coaching instruction, skill development and live application of the game of basketball all require some form of experience. Whether you are classified as a student-athlete, athlete, coach, skills trainer, or a teacher with respect to the game of basketball each obtains an accumulation of knowledge at some level or skill set to a certain degree of the game.

My experience came from many facets of instruction, development and life's situations accumulating to a total time-frame of 21 years. Some studies reveal that "athleticism" can be seen in our genes. While I was born nearly 10 lbs. and hovering a foot over my fellow kindergarden classmates, I could have easily been proof of this genetic "truth". As a little "tom boy" girl I watched the boys at the park and waited until they were gone to mimic what I saw.

In the third grade my basketball journey began. After much experimentation and being infatuated with beating the boys, in the fifth grade I played with an all boys YMCA team on the army base where I grew up. As a first time team member of my middle school team at the conclusion of my 7th grade season, with a rather aggressive display of experience different than most girls, I aspired to play professional basketball.

Standing 5 ft. 10 1/2 as an eighth grader, 'slappin da glass' I not only aspired to play professional basketball, but wanted to dunk & be the best female athlete every time I stepped on the court to compete so I spent countless hours with the guys on the blacktop, 11 ft. goals in 100 degree humidity at the rec center in Leesville, Louisiana. On the days that I couldn't find run outside I headed out to Fort Polk to play pick up with the soldiers. There were days when I couldn't get a shot off. After all, I was 110 pounds soaking wet as my step dad used to say! In due time though, I became the fifth player instead of "I got NEXT". I learned at a very young age that RESPECT would always be earned and not given.

Pressing fast forward and faced with the challenges of being an introvert and solo freshman on varsity, I had to earn my spot on varsity in spite of my substantial experience. I did not have many votes of popularity among my teammates until the district season rolled around and I contributed to one of our four District 4A Championship titles. As seasons change swiftly, by the time I was into the summer of my 9th grade year the NEW ORLEANS Domino's sought after me to play on an AAU Top 5 team among other highly decorated players. My career from there was a foreshadowing of a bright future that create a myriad of college's interest in me as well as accolades that contributed to basketball consuming my entire life and me LOVING IT! My passion was to win with dignity and to compete with a tenacity that would change my family circumstances growing up.

The things that I achieved would have been of no importance had it not all been a sacrifice made to become a first generation high school graduate in my immediate family to earn a college athletic scholarship to play basketball at the next level that would contribute to the mastery of two Bachelor degrees in 5 years and positive example to my younger sisters to strive for EXCELLENCE, education and a better life.

I am the epitome of the hard work, dedication, sacrifice, struggle, and perseverance of EXPERIENCE. I've played on many teams and at many different levels with some of the greatest players that will ever play the women's game, but the EXPERIENCE that I own is priceless. The didactic lessons that I have learned are for the women's game....for the many young women's lives that I have encountered and touched. My EXPERIENCE is who I AM.
